Will meet with Kim in May or early June

Bloomberg US Confirms N. Korea's Offer to Talk Denuclearization

United States President Donald Trump on Monday announced that the meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong-un will take place in May or early June and said the summit will be an "exciting thing for the world".

"North Korea, by the way, as you've probably seen - and we've been in touch with North Korea - we'll be meeting with them sometime in May or early June", he said.

In Pyongyang's first mention of official dialogue with the U.S. and the summit with Seoul, the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) added that Kim set "strategic and tactical issues" to be upheld by the Workers' Party. -North Korea contact is proceeding smoothly.

Indeed, at the end of November, the last time it tested a missile, North Korea declared it had built a new intercontinental ballistic missile "tipped with super-large heavy warhead" that marked "the completion of the rocket weaponry system development".

Kim Jong Un as well as high ranking officials from the North have been engaging other countries in a flurry of diplomacy in recent weeks with the North Korean leader making a surprise visit to China last month, talking with President Xi Jinping.

He added that previous presidents should have held such talks.

According to a diplomatic source cited by Yomiuri, if the United States "faithfully takes part in the summit", the North Korean leader is ready to be more active and open to receiving global scrutiny and inspection on dismantling his nuclear programs, compared to past agreements such as the Geneva Agreement in 1994 and the Six-Party Agreement in 2005.

The meeting will be the third summit between the two Koreas.

They appear, however, to be much more low-key this year.

"And I think there'll be great respect paid by both parties and hopefully we'll be able to make a deal on the de-nuking of North Korea", the President said. It followed reports from unnamed United States administration officials that the USA was in contact with North Korea in preparation for the talks.

Comparing Pyongyang's perspective to a "one-sided" match of the traditional Korean board game of Go, Kim said the DPRK believes it has everything to gain and nothing to lose at the summit.

No specifics have yet emerged concerning the date or venue, with a 3rd country such as Mongolia or Sweden reportedly under consideration to host the talks.
