Equal Pay Day highlights salary inequities for Tennessee's working women

Maternity leave varies widely across universities

Sisters selling the Equal Pay Day narrative argue that women make 83 cents for every dollar a man makes in the US economy, thus implying that American employers are guilty of widespread discrimination. Women make up 40% of the United Kingdom drinks group's executive committee and 44% of its board of directors, but Diageo's board will achieve gender parity when Ursula Burns joins as a non-executive director in April.

Asian American women earn the most compared to other minority women at 87 cents to the dollar.

Today is Equal Pay Day, a day that symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year.

Since the 1960s, the pay gap has narrowed in the U.S., but progress in the last couple of decades has slowed. For working-class women of color, that oppression is tripled. "This suggests that the disruption to the early career of women who have children in their late 20s and early 30s is more harmful than either having a child before the career is really started or having it later, when the woman is established in her career", the researchers write in the paper. White non-Hispanic women had paid off 37%, black women 9% and Hispanic or Latina women 3%.

But similar pay gaps were also reflected at companies where most of the employees are women.

"[Negotiation is] a double-edged sword", Harris says. On average, these companies offer women 4% less than men for the same role, with some offering women up to 45% less.

The pay gap worsened for American women younger than 40 between 2015 and 2017, despite widespread attention to the issue, according to a study.

Last year, Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB-168 into law, prohibiting employers from asking applicants or potential hires about salary history. The event was first observed in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity, a coalition of women's and civil rights organizations, labor unions, professional associations, and individuals working to eliminate sex- and race-based wage discrimination and to achieve pay equity.

By doing his small part to close that gap, Emanuel is currying favor with women, an important voting bloc whose support he needs to win a third term. And since the wage gap is less prevalent among low earners overall, these women may continue to bring home paychecks that match their husbands'.

So why do women earn less than men? In 2013, Montana women earned on average 67 percent as much as their male counterparts.

There is federal law that prevents wage discrimination based on gender.

Across the state, breweries and distilleries are hosting pint nights to raise money for the Women's Foundation of Montana to work for pay equity.
