Six dead after plane crash in Scottsdale

Emergency services at the scene

Officer Kevin Watts with Scottsdale Police says they started getting 911 calls reporting the crash around 8:45 p.m. near Bell and Hayden roads.

CBS News affiliate KPHO said more than half a dozen emergency vehicles quickly arrived at the scene of the crash.

The Scottsdale Airport and the TPC Scottsdale Champions Golf Course are a little over two miles apart.

The plane was carrying five people at the time of the crash, police confirmed during a press conference.

A plane crashed on Monday night at TPC Scottsdale.

Multiple people are dead after a small plane caught fire after takeoff and crashed at a nearby Arizona golf course on Monday, officials said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. No one on the ground was injured.

Investigators at the site Tuesday morning examined the burned wreckage next to a tree.

The identities of the six victims had not been released as of early Tuesday.

The crash happened on the sister golf course to the Stadium Course, where the PGA holds the Waste Management Phoenix Open each February.

A Piper PA-24 is a small, four- or six-seat plane.

Watts said he didn't know where they were headed before the crash.
