Trump wins pledges of 1600 troops for border

Head of National guard says hundreds of troops are heading to southwest U.S. border immediately

Trump said last week he wants to send 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard members to the border, issuing a proclamation citing "the lawlessness that continues at our southern border".

In Texas, where Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has pledged to put more than 1,000 Guard members into action, military officials said Tuesday that 300 troops would report to armories this week for preparation and training.

Some National Guard members have started arriving at the U.S. -Mexico border with more expected as federal government officials seek ways to curtail illegal immigration.

Brown says the California Guard members may be deployed at the border, the coast and elsewhere statewide.

The only border state that hasn't yet responded to the Trump administration's request is California, whose Democratic Gov.

He praised the administration's request for troops to the border, saying it's a "public safety" issue for Arizona.

Ducey told reporters later that the deployments are needed to stop a surge of border crossings since March and accused the US government of previously ignoring the border "for almost a decade".

"National Guard personnel will only be armed for their own self-protection to the extent required by the circumstances of the mission they are performing", he said.

Joel Villarreal, the mayor of Rio Grande City in Texas, said he did not agree with what he characterized as "the militarization of the border". On Monday, Abbott told San Antonio radio station KTSA that Texas will significantly ramp up its commitment to Trump's call over the next several weeks.

California has not announced whether it would send troops. He added that he wanted to "downplay any notion" that "our National Guard is showing up with military bayonets trying to take on anybody that's coming across the border, because that is not their role". The said the initial deployment was command and planning staff, along with support aircraft, vehicles and other equipment.

There is no end date for the deployment, Abbott said: "We may be in this for the long haul".

Ducey denied that his decision to send guard members to the border was politically motivated. "You show me somebody who is for drug cartels or human trafficking or this ammunition that's coming over a wide-open and unprotected border here".

Trump has indicated he might keep troops at the border until his promised border wall is built.

In the Texas border town of Roma, about a half-dozen uniformed Guard members were seen Tuesday near an global bridge along the Rio Grande.

Arizona is set to send about 338 Guard troops to the border, Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, said on Twitter.

The troops deployed will not be arresting or deporting immigrants, the Pentagon said.

According to an Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs release, the troops will "provide air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of the border infrastructure and logistical support".

"The number of people coming across the border has increased more than 200 percent over this time a year ago", Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement. This will allow agents to focus more on making arrests when people cross the border illegally.

That's erased a decline for which Trump repeatedly took credit.

Trump's move is not totally unusual: both former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also deployed the Guard to the border in 2010 and 2006, respectively.
