Names of four deadly 2017 hurricanes retired

Harvey Irma Maria and Nate names retired from hurricane list

Taking their place will be Harold, Idalia, Margot, and Nigel respectively.

The WMO chooses the names for each year, which are on a six year rotation.in the 2023 season, we'll re-use the 2017 alphabet (Cindy, Katia, Gert, etc.) but those four names will not be included.

The World Meteorological Organization on Thursday decided the three would no longer be used as Atlantic tropical storm names.

The 2005 hurricane season, which also saw the most named storms, saw the most names retired with five: Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.

After the extensive storm damage caused by recent storms, the World Meteorological Organization decided their names are not worth repeating.

Hurricane Irma will never impact Jacksonville again.

Hurricane Harvey killed at least 68 people after hitting Texas last August.

Hurricane Irma was a category 5 storm that made landfall at seven locations along the Carribbean and Florida. It made landfall in south-west Florida at category 4 intensity, prompting the evacuation of about 6 million residents and causing severe flooding. Irma caused 44 deaths and 85 indirect deaths in the Caribbean and Florida.

But if a hurricane is extremely destructive or deadly, the committee votes to retire that name and replace it with another one because reusing it would be insensitive. Hundreds more were injured preparing for the storm, during it or in its aftermath.

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico in late September as a Category 4 storm packing winds of 155 miles per hour. In Puerto Rico, the death toll stands at 65, plus an unknown number of indirect deaths.

Irma and Maria, both Category 5s, and Nate, a Category 1, are blamed for a combined $167 billion in damage to Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and along the Gulf Coast. Nate's rainfall inundated Central America and killed 45.
