ADHS advises residents to not eat and throw away chopped Romaine lettuce

A microbiologist points out an isolated E. coli growth on an agar plate in a file

Chopped remain lettuce grown in the Yuma, AZ area is the likely source to date of this year's only multistate E. coli O157: H7 outbreak, and it is not over.

35 people infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 have been reported from the 11 states. Three people were hospitalized, and two have developed kidney failure linked to the E. coli infection.

Pennsylvania saw the most cases at nine; eight were infected in Idaho and seven in New Jersey.

The CDC and officials in affected states are working to determine the source of the outbreak that has the potential to spread in coming weeks.

While government officials believe that the lettuce came from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, no specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified.

The CDC has said these complications are is more common older adults, young children and those with weakened immune systems. Our E. coli lawyers have litigated E. coli and HUS cases stemming from outbreaks traced to ground beef, raw milk, lettuce, spinach, sprouts, and other food products.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is on the hunt again, looking for the risky, E. coli-harboring culprit food that has sickened 17 people in seven different USA states. New Jersey has the most cases of people falling ill with six while Idaho is second with four cases.

For consumers, CDC said this means any store-bought chopped romaine lettuce purchased for home-made salads and salad mixings is best thrown out. Romaine lettuce was the only ingredient involved in every salad reportedly consumed.

"E. coli O157:H7 is a type of bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps, vomiting and low-grade fever", Health and Welfare said in a statement. This warning includes salad mixes that include romaine lettuce. You can also write down what you ate in the week before you started to get sick and talk to public health investigators if they have questions about your illness.
