Island-wide blackout hits Puerto Rico; officials probe cause

The Puerto Rico Electrical Power Authority have flaunted Wednesday early morning that ONLY 3 per-cent of its own clients are without electrical power, significantly wrapping up just what several estimations named the largest electrical power failing within U.S. history.

On Wednesday evening, PREPA announced that more than 51,000 customers have electric service, though Puerto Rico has more than 1 million households.

Officials said restoring power to hospitals, airports, banking centers and water pumping systems was their priority.

Last year, prior to Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico's retail consumers paid more for their power than consumers in any U.S. state except Hawaii, the EIA says.

M - After seven months and close to $2.5 billion, nearly everybody in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico had their lights back on - until a freak accident on Wednesday plunged the entire island once again into darkness, NYTimesreported. Our local Walla Walla Army Corps of Engineers still has a team down there, working to restore power after a massive Category 4 hurricane devastated the island a year ago. 870,000 customers lost electricity after a tree fell on a power line last week, PREPA said.

"Today's total power outage in Puerto Rico pinpoints the fact that we are still in a very fragile state", she said. "This is another example of why Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure needs to incorporate new forms of power".

Is Puerto Rico ready for hurricane season?

"Well, right now we're still as motivated as ever", Major Carrasco said.

The blackout comes as Puerto Rico legislators debate whether to private the island's Electric Power Authority, which is $14 billion in debt and relies on infrastructure almost three times older than the industry average.

In response to the controversy, the government of Puerto Rico canceled the contract with Whitefish Energy Holdings on October 29, 2017. Mammoth's subsidiary, Cobra Acquisitions, was tasked with removing the fallen tower to prevent interference with another transmission tower's structural support wires. He said the union is investigating why a breaker at a main power station in the island's southern region did not function when the outage occurred. "Rebuilding the generating capability of Puerto Rico was not the Corps of Engineers' task".

"The outage snarled traffic across the island, interrupted classes and work, and forced dozens of businesses to temporarily close, including the largest mall and popular tourist attractions like a 16th Century fort in the historic part of Puerto Rico's capital", Coto wrote.
