ZTE Calls US Sanctions 'Unacceptable,' Complains of Unfair Treatment

Chinese phone maker ZTE is unable to access US components for now

"The Denial Order will not only severely impact the survival and development of ZTE, but will also cause damages to all partners of ZTE including a large number of USA companies", it said, adding that it would continue with its attempts to resolve the issue "through communication".

Reuters reports that ZTE can appeal to the Bureau of Industry and Security, the same agency that issued the ban.

The ban is adding to rising tensions between China and the USA over trade.

And now ZTE has said that the USA ban is unfair and threatens its survival, Reuters reported. It pointed out that last year alone it spent more than $50 million on its export compliance program, and is planning to boost that level this year.

In its first detailed response since Washington banned the company this week from buying USA -made components for seven years, ZTE said the move will "severely impact the survival and development of ZTE".

"It is extremely unfair to ZTE and we can not accept it!" ZTE had promised to dismiss four senior employees and discipline 35 others involved in the trade violation by either reducing their bonuses or reprimanding them.

"Since April 2016, ZTE Corp. has continuously reflected on lessons from its past experience in export control compliance and has attached great importance to export control compliance", it said.

ZTE pleaded guilty in March 2017 and agreed to pay a $1.19 billion penalty for shipping equipment to Iran and North Korea in violation of us regulations. It would also handicap the mainland's ability to build the world's largest 5G network by the end of this decade.

While Huawei is forced to leave the United States market, ZTE might face a much bigger trouble after violating export regulations because it might not be able to install widely used Google Apps such as Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, and Maps on its smartphones as a result of the current ban.

The ZTE case represents a "milestone" and government leaders should urge the company to boost compliance oversight to ease "disastrous" consequences, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) said in a policy proposal. The six-paragraph official statement from corporate mulls over the punishment and reasserts ZTE's compliance to global law, which it "regard [s] as the foundation and bottom-line of the company's operation".

"We're going to have to see how this unfolds".

"Refusal orders will not only seriously endanger the survival of ZTE, but also hurt the interests of all ZTE's partners including a large number of U.S. companies". "Within ZTE, compliance is regarded as the foundation and bottom-line of the company's operation".
