Mitt Romney faces Senate major in Utah after state GOP conference setback

When Mitt Romney announced his candidacy for a Senate seat in Utah in February and received an endorsement from President Trump shortly thereafter, many expected that the former governor of MA and 2012 presidential candidate would be sailing to a November victory.

If he had won the party delegate vote at the convention, he would have bypassed a primary altogether.

Kennedy edged Romney in the vote among convention delegates, 51 percent to 49 percent, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

GOP voters will decide between the two in a June 26 primary.

"I know there were many people who were not enthusiastic about someone gathering signatures", Romney said, adding that pursuing the nomination through both signatures and the convention "was right for me".

Nicole Nixon of member station KUER reports for our Newscast unit that Romney had a hard time winning support from Utah's more conservative delegates.

Kennedy, a doctor and lawyer, framed himself as an underdog taking on the "Romney machine".

Kennedy and the ten other candidates Romney faced at the convention questioned the depth of his ties to Utah, and his shifting stance on Trump.

Romney pushed back against critics who said he's an interloper in Utah politics by referring to his role in staging the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.

"I'm exhausted", Kennedy told delegates before the last vote.

Romney offered a characteristically awkward retort, correcting Kennedy on his biblical metaphor and claiming he's the one who'll take on the status quo in D.C. "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C".

The former MA governor is also being painted by Kennedy as a carpetbagger.

After his failed 2012 presidential campaign, he moved to Utah, where he gained popularity after running as the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

He has worked to keep the focus on state issues rather than his history of well-documented feuds with Trump, whom he called a "conman" and a phony during the 2016 race. Romney was especially critical of Trump's negative rhetoric about immigrants. But the 2 men have shown fresh indications of burying the hatchet, also Trump's approval has been accepted by Romney.
