FA apologise after mocking Kane with Smalling tweet

FA apologise for tweet about Kane & Smalling in FA Cup semi

Chris Smalling of Manchester United holds off Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur during The Emirates FA Cup Semi Final match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on April 21, 2018 in London, England.

The England striker's woes prompted a cheeky tweet from the FA Cup account asking Smalling what was in his pocket - with a short clip from an unrelated interview showing the defender saying "Harry Kane".

The tweet has also been removed. It was retweeted over 20,000 times, attracting a huge response, before it was deleted.

Following the fallout from the tweet, an FA spokesperson has said: "We have written to both clubs to apologise for any offence caused".

Kane has been the subject of many jokes over the past two weeks since successfully winning an appeal to claim a goal originally credited to Eriksen in Tottenham's victory over Stoke City.

"Harry Kane is so prolific that he is able to score without touching the ball!"

He will be frustrated after the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United and this weekend's opponents Watford will potentially be in for a very stern test.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has already said Kane, who has struggled for sharpness since returning from an ankle injury at the beginning of this month, was left disappointed by the furore.
