Do you agree with the Yawkey Way name change?

BOSTON MA- 3/15/2018 The name Yawkey Way around Fenway Park Boston SECTION METRO TOPIC 16yawkeypic

The name will revert back to Jersey Street.

Boston's Public Improvement Commission voted unanimously in favor of the name change on Thursday, removing the name of Tom Yawkey, the longtime former Red Sox owner, from the public street adjacent to Fenway Park.

The Boston Red Sox have a renamed street to call home.

Yawkey's supporters have argued the former Red Sox owner and his Yawkey Foundation donated millions of dollars to inner-city programs and that changing the name tainted the legacy of the former owner, who was in charge of the team from 1933-76.

Since his death, Yawkey has become a controversial figure, particularly condemned as a racist.

But we also believe that consideration of the whole story of the team's efforts to integrate and the full picture of Tom Yawkey's life more than justified keeping the name Yawkey Way. Yawkey died in 1976 and the street was named after him in 1977. Yawkey is rumored to have screamed a racial slur at Jackie Robinson and other black players during a tryout.

In a statement from the Red Sox, the team said it was pleased with the outcome of Thursday's hearing and thanked members of the community who voiced their support for the proposal.

The debate over Yawkey Way was part of the larger national debate over markers, memorials and statues that are now perceived as racist or incompatible with modern sensibilities. Walsh said. "This is not the answer to that".

Last summer, the City of Boston renamed a piece of the road to David Ortiz Drive to honor the retired slugger and multi-time postseason hero.

It was not clear when the street signs would be changed.
