Twitter Urging All Users to Change Passwords ASAP

Twitter advises all users to change passwords after glitch that exposed some in plain text

Meanwhile, tech expert Jan Vermeulen says social media users should not take internet security for granted.

This article will provide instructions on how you can change your password on Twitter.

The bug occurred prior to the hashing process and resulted in passwords being stored in a plain text log that Twitter discovered internally.

After investigating, the company said there was no indication of a breach or misuse of the information, but out of an abundance of caution, people should go ahead and change their passwords anyway.

Twitter recommends that all users reset their passwords on Twitter and on any services that use duplicate passwords.

Users receive a warning message when logging in to Twitter. Notification has been sent by Twitter to its users asking them to modify their passwords, right away.

Twitter wasn't hacked, but it still really wants you to change your password.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter's chief technology officer, said in a blog post that Twitter has fixed the issue and that there were no signs that anyone had breached or misused the passwords. These are used to confirm account credentials without revealing the actual password. As a solution, the developers have "removed the passwords and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again". Uncoded passwords were collected in an internal log, the French press and the Associated Press reported.

The US Federal Trade Commission, which investigates companies accused of deceptive practices related to data security, declined comment on the password glitch.

"We are very sorry this happened", it said.

Use difficult and hard-to-guess passwords. The fact that the company is suggesting that you change your password could mean that there is significant risk involved.
