Saudi Arabia reiterates vow to pursue nuclear weapons if Iran does

Iran's ballistic missiles bone of contention with West

Energy-rich Saudi Arabia, a fierce regional foe of Iran's, is already seeking United States help in starting a nuclear program of its own, giving rise to concerns that it might be trying to compete with Iran's nuclear program and create its own nuclear weapons program.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain swiftly backed U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran.

In his White House speech, Trump condemned Iran's "sinister activities" including backing for groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

As fears of a Middle Eastern nuclear arms race grew the Saudi politician vowed to match any Iranian military development including assembling a nuclear arsenal.

Such behavior is unacceptable.

"This escalation runs against the commitment of all sides to a political solution of the conflict in Yemen and feeds into a vicious cycle of successive retaliations that risks to undermine the efforts of UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and put the resumption of peace talks in jeopardy", the statement read.

'We will find the right way and at the right time to respond to this, ' he warned.

Yemeni armed forces, supported by popular committees, fired Wednesday night a ballistic missile at the headquarters of Saudi Information and Electronic Warfare in Najran, southern Saudi Arabia. "We are trying to avoid at all costs direct military action with Iran, but Iran s behavior such as this can not continue".

"Speaking to Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear, Kevin Kamps, the radioactive waste watchdog at the organization Beyond Nuclear, called Trump's decision to part ways with the nuke deal "the worst broken deal ever".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has argued that his country can seek to upscale their nuclear arsenal "without limit" now. "The consequences could be severe", said Joost Hiltermann, Program Director, Middle East and North Africa at The International Crisis Group.

His comments came shortly after Houthi rebels fired two ballistic missiles toward Riyadh.

Tensions have been growing for some time between Saudi Arabia and other powers in the region. The country believes that Iran is supplying ballistic missiles to the militia. Global agencies responsible for inspecting compliance have said that Iran was in full cooperation with the agreement's terms.
