Family of six bomb Indonesia churches

A damaged motorbike is seen at the scene outside a church following a suicide bomb in Surabaya

They say the mother and her 2 daughters aged 12 and 9 detonated explosives they were wearing inside a third church.

However, Malaysia [VIDEO]and Indonesia have seen plenty of Islamist violence in the past, and Muslim-majority areas in southern Thailand and The Philippines are now embroiled in deadly insurgencies that include ISIS-like organizations.

Police in Indonesia have revealed that members of the same family were behind suicide bomb attacks on 3 churches on Sunday.

There have not yet been any claims of responsibility.

Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently the Islamic State group controlled significant territory.

National police chief Tito Karnavian said that the father detonated a vehicle bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a motorcycle for their attack, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives. The father drove his explosive-rigged vehicle into Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church, according to local police. The group claimed its first attack in the country in 2016, when four civilians were killed in explosions and shootings in the capital Jakarta.

This was Indonesia's second worst terrorist attack, the first having occurred in 2002 in which 202 people were killed by a bomb outside of a nightclub.

For years, the Muslim countries of Southeast Asia have been upheld as examples of moderate or peaceful Islam.

Local police reportedly stopped additional attacks from happening and have been on the lookout for suspected members of JAD and other extremist groups.

Tveit said, "Government action must be matched by solidarity among Christians, Muslims and people of all faiths as they interact at the local level and together denounce any violent attack". "The state will not tolerate this act of cowardice".

National police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said police killed four suspected militants and arrested two early Sunday in West Java, though it was not clear whether that activity was connected to the church bombings, the AP reported.

Images showed a vehicle engulfed in flames and plumes of thick black smoke as a body lay outside the gate of Santa Maria Catholic church, with motorcycles toppled over amid the mangled debris.

One suicide bomber appeared to have been disguised as a churchgoer. It didn't mention anything about families or children taking part and said there were only three attackers.

"Three people have died, two are in the hospital and one is safe", he texted via Whatsapp.

Mangera, the Surabaya police spokesman, said police responded about 9 p.m.to an explosion in a residential building in Sidoarjo, a district bordering Surabaya.

Yono, tenant coordinator at the apartment block, said the family had lived there since 2015.

Christians make up about 10 per cent of Indonesia's population of 260 million, making them the largest religious minority in the country. Attacks on churches in 2000 killed 15 people and wounded nearly 100.

Previous incidents have included a 2004 suicide auto bomb that killed 10 outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, twin bomb blasts that killed 22 in a market in the Central Sulawesi town of Tentena, and a suicide bombing in 2005 that killed 20 in Bali. He said 41 people were wounded at that location, including two police officers, while one or more of the bombers were killed. The death toll has risen to 11 people.

But the coordinated nature of Sunday's bombings suggested a higher level of planning, analysts said.
