Hawaii volcano ash plume rises to 12000ft

Before-and-After Satellite Images Show Damage Caused By Lava From Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano

This is the first time that officials have put out an aviation red alert since Kilauea's latest burst of activity began on Hawaii's Big Island on May 3.

The Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island has come to life, belching ash into the sky and spewing fountains of lava in a residential area where people were ordered to leave their homes.

According to the agency, plumes of ash cloud as high as 12,000 feet are threatening visibility, with volatile wind conditions potentially bringing projectiles and volcanic fog in contact with aircraft.

An "unhealthy air" advisory has been issued for the community of Pahala, as far as 18 miles from the volcano.

There was no effect on air carrier operations to Hawaii on Wednesday, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said in an email.

Two new fissures are small with not much lava coming from them, she said.

Smoke billowed from a lava fissure near a home in Puna's Leilani Estates subdivision Tuesday afternoon.

A flow from fissure 17 that opened up after the volcano in Hawaii. Of the 21 fissures, 17 is the longest, and has been shooting lava like a fountain and "sending spatter more than 100 feet into the air", the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. The plant brings steam and hot liquid up through underground wells and the steam feeds a turbine generator to produce electricity.

Ash emission from the Kilauea summit vent will likely be variable with periods of increased and decreased intensity depending on the occurrence of rockfalls into the vent and other changes within the vent. He noted that cancellations from May through July have hit at least $5 million.

The Pacific island was rocked by its largest natural disaster in 40 years this month, a 6.9 magnitude tremor which triggered fresh eruptions of molten lava from one of the world's most active volcanoes.

Kilauea has also taken its toll on the areas booming tourism industry, which sees thousands pouring into the area every month to visit the island's volcano park.
