Foreign Secretary statement on the MH17 investigation

Netherlands, Australia blame Russia for 'downing' MH17 plane

Investigators however painstakingly recreated the BUK system's route from Kursk across the border into rebel-held eastern Ukraine using videos and photos.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Russia will have many questions to answer after investigators revealed the missile which brought down flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine originated from a Russian military brigade.

Australia and the Netherlands are calling on Russian Federation to accept responsibility for "those internationally wrongful acts", provide guarantees with assurances "and guarantees of non-repetition", as well as to provide full reparation to the countries.

In a written statement, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said: "That a sophisticated weapon belonging to the Russian Army was dispatched and used to shoot down a civilian aircraft should be of grave worldwide concern".

In turn, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on May 24 that Ukraine will do "everything possible to ensure that Russia's activities as a state sponsor of terrorism are treated appropriately at the United Nations International Court of Justice".

The airliner flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was hit by a Russian-made "Buk" anti-aircraft missile on July 17, 2014 over territory held by pro-Russian separatists.

Russian Federation is facing global calls to accept responsibility for the downing of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014, which caused the deaths of all 298 people onboard.

On Thursday, a Dutch-led worldwide team of investigators said they had strong evidence that the Buk missile system that brought down the Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight came from a Russia-based military unit, the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade based in the Russian city of Kursk.

The Russian government has long denied involvement in the crash, saying on Thursday that its missile launchers have never entered Ukraine - despite photo evidence provided by global investigators.

She also said those responsible for the downing of flight should be held accountable in line with global standards, the release said.

"They want to see closure, but they also deserve justice, and we will be seeking reparations for the atrocities caused by this conduct", Bishop said.

The Dutch government said in a statement that a "possible" next step would be to take the case to an global court or organization.

"If our partners [an apparent reference to the Netherlands] decided even in this case of a greatest human tragedy, the death of hundreds of people, to speculate on it for achieving their political goals, I leave it on their conscience".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and the loved ones of the passengers and crew of flight MH17".

It said on Friday that fragments indicated the Soviet-made missile was made in 1986, but that the Russian military decommissioned missiles of that type in 2011.

He told reporters gathered for a press conference in Utrecht that "the 53rd Brigade forms part of the Russian armed forces".

The U.S.is affirming new findings from investigators linking the 2014 downing of a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane to the Russian military. But they had stopped short of directly saying who pulled the trigger.

"All findings from this forensic investigation confirm the earlier conclusion of the JIT that Flight MH17 was shot down by 9M38 series missile", said Jennifer Hurst of the Australian Federal Police.

Dutch officials are now considering criminal proceedings against the Russian military over the attack, which killed 196 Dutch citizens.
