Mueller probe: Faith in Justice Department weakens

Sen. John Kennedy calls on Mueller to end Russia investigation ‘atmosphere of rumors

Countering my outlook is the Times, which, as one example, told us in a headline, "FBI Used Informant to Investigate Russia Ties to Campaign, Not to Spy, as Trump Claims". They also said it was inappropriate for White House officials to attend any part of a meeting about a criminal investigation that directly concerns the president and his campaign.

"They also conveyed the President's understanding of the need to protect human intelligence services and the importance of communication between the branches of government", the statement said.

But Democrats slammed the fact that Flood was there at all.

Trump's latest broadsides set the stage for the unusual decision by the White House to arrange a briefing Thursday about classified documents for just two Republican House members, both Trump allies, as Trump and his supporters in Congress pressed for information on the outside informant. Those individuals left before the substance of it.

The statement was issued by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, and the top Democrats on the Senate and House intelligence panels, Warner and Rep. Adam Schiff. We can't trust anything they say!

Donald Trump's relentless attacks launched against Robert Mueller (e.g., "phony collusion", "witch hunt") have apparently diverted the public's attention from the achievements of the Special Counsel.

Giuliani later told CNN that he assumes Flood went to the meeting because the President wanted him there.

Haines, who had previously served as deputy Central Intelligence Agency director under John Brennan, was charged by the White House in the summer of 2016 with overseeing the US response to the Russian election attack.

Giuliani also said that learning about the confidential source is a prerequisite for any special counsel interview with the President.

But after two briefings Thursday, there were no signs of an imminent showdown.

"That is kind of in my mind, and maybe I'm a traditionalist, violates a norm and standard of behavior that's always been abided by previous presidents and to me that's bothersome and I think another sign of some erosion of our institutions and our norms and standards", Clapper said.

BATON ROUGE LA – DECEMBER 10 U.S. Senator John Kennedy

"There are motives on behalf of the House Intelligence Committee - [Republican Chairman] Devin Nunes, who is trying to interfere with an ongoing active investigation and seems not concerned at all about blowing a source who has contributed to other investigations and has associates all around the world".

Rosenstein will replace another Justice Department official who was originally scheduled to attend.

"I look forward to the prompt completion of the intelligence committee's oversight work in this area now that they are getting the cooperation necessary for them to complete their work while protecting sources and methods", Ryan said in a statement.

"Trump, in turn, has tweeted that Clapper said the President "'should be happy that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was SPYING on his campaign'".

"The whole thing was a mistake and should never have happened", Giuliani told the Associated Press, adding that the Justice Department should acknowledge the error.

Democrats, meanwhile, said that based on the information they had received, the president's claims of a political spy were unsupported.

Initially offered only to Republicans, the briefings were the latest piece of stagecraft meant to publicize and bolster the allegations. The first meeting was held at the Justice Department while the "Gang of Eight" briefing was on Capitol Hill.

Nunes attended both briefings Thursday.

On April 2, he called the FBI and Justice Department's desire to withhold sensitive information related to the ongoing investigation "an embarrassment to our country".

Trump could order the department to turn over documents, though some fear that could provoke a potentially catastrophic confrontation - with Justice Department leaders quitting in protest or refusing the order and forcing Trump to fire them. The "Gang of Eight" includes the top Republicans and Democrats in each chamber and the top Republicans and Democrats on the House and Senate intelligence committees.
