Four Russian servicemen killed in Syrian militant raid

Four Russian military killed by militants’ fire in Syria - Defense Ministry

The number of rebel casualties could not immediately be confirmed, but an independent monitor claimed the casualty rate among Russian and Syrian fighters appeared to be higher than the Kremlin has reported.

According to the ministry, the fight in the Syrian province of Deir-ez-Zor happened in the dark.

A Russian soldier standing guard in a central street in Deir Ezzor is one of a rumoured 4,000 or 5,000 Russian military servicement stationed in Syria.

The defense department in Moscow reported its armies had murdered forty three fighters in the combat.

A war monitoring group however, has put the death toll of Russian forces at nine.

The ministry said the fighting lasted around an hour and left 43 militants dead.

The remaining 26 were all Syrian forces, he told AFP.

"There have been no incidents involving the capture or losses among military servicemen of Russia's armed forces in the province of Dayr al-Zawr or in other areas in Syria", Russia's Interfax news agency quoted a defense ministry official as saying at the time. Two died on the spot and two soldiers of the Russian Federation has died in hospital from his injuries.

A steadfast ally of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has helped his army recapture swathes of territory since 2015 by providing air strikes and ground troops.

Captain Nikolay Afanasov was killed on July 12 a year ago by "sudden mortar fire on a Syrian government army camp" in Syria's western-central province of Hama.

Since then, Russian Federation mainly conducted air strikes against groups opposed to the government, including the Syrian National Coalition, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), al-Nusra Front, and others.

In an attack by Islamic state militants on Syrian army position near the town of Mayadin in the province of Deir ez-Zor were killed at least 26 soldiers of the government army, and nine Russians.
