'This is an introductory course,' Muskegon racial bias instructor on Starbucks' closing

Michelle Tyrene Johnson a reporter at KCUR in Kansas City conducted diversity and bias training for employers for more than 15 years

Associates at stores, distribution centers and global teams will soon be trained, the company said, as part of its "longstanding company commitment to diversity and inclusion" as a corporate core value.

Starbucks signed a US$7 billion licensing deal with Nestle earlier this month that banks on the power of its brand in the United States to strengthen the Swiss company's leading position globally.

"Personally, I don't have anything against an organization deciding that they want to limit who comes in the doors to customers". They were arrested by police minutes after they sat down to await a business meeting.

"We give them an opportunity to learn about teamwork, customer service, cash handling, they also delve into ethics and resume building", said Project Empower program director Monique Williams-Moore.

The chain said all company-operated Starbucks locations would close, while thousands of licensed stores-such as those found at grocery stores, universities, hotels or airports-would likely remain open.

Starbucks President and CEO Kevin Johnson acknowledged what he called the "disheartening situation that unfolded in Philadelphia" in one video and said the company's mission is to be a "place where everyone feels welcome".

Starbucks has since changed its policy, allowing anyone to use the bathroom whether they buy something or not.

Starbucks is using the afternoon to "conduct racial-bias education geared toward preventing discrimination in our stores", the company said in a statement in April.

Starbucks stores in downtown Honolulu, as well as at Ward Village, Ala Moana, Waikiki, Kahala and most standalone retail locations will all close at 2:30 p.m. City officials also promised to set up a scheme for young entrepreneurs.

It's unclear exactly what the company's several-hour racial bias training session entails because media wasn't allowed to spectate.

Starbucks is closing locations across the USA on Tuesday afternoon.

"We realise that four hours of training is not going to solve racial inequity in America or anyone coming into our stores who may have a problem", Starbucks executive chairman Howard Schultz said in an interview with CNN.

Starbucks is shutting down for the afternoon on Tuesday, May 29, to provide anti-racial bias training for its employees.

"I think another way that they should be thinking about is who it is that they are hiring to be in management positions", Gaither said.

However, it is expected that the training will have a largely positive effect in the long run.
