Montana spellers fall short in national bee, but make impression

Melodie Loya looks upward as she tries to spell a word during the Scripps National Spelling Bee at National Harbor in Oxon Hill Maryland U.S

Nemmani, a 14-year-old eighth-grader from Texas, spelt "koinonia" correctly for his victory on Thursday night after second place victor, 12-year-old Naysa Modi, got "bewusstseinslage" wrong. The family had to move to the Dallas area just so Karthik could attend a school that participated in the Scripps program - and then he ran up against some of the nation's best spellers at the county level.

Karthik is the 14th consecutive Indian-American competition champion.

Not knowing a word doesn't always mean a speller will get it wrong - the savviest competitors can piece together a word by relying on their knowledge of roots and language patterns.

He showed his aptitude for spelling early, arranging block letters to form the word "horse" at age three, said his father, Krishna Nemmani. Last year, she competed and tied for 189th place.

The victor receives $42,500 in cash, plus other prizes. He takes home more than $42,000 in cash and prizes.

Simone qualified for the national bee by winning the Miami Herald's annual competition.

The bee started with 512 spellers, who took a written exam and spelled a word on stage Tuesday, May 29.

In doing so, the 14-year-old emerged the top speller from a record-shattering 515 contestants at the national bee, compared with 291 last year, after organisers expanded eligibility.

"He deserves it. He would have beaten me, definitely", Sri said. "But I recognise with three days that I've got to do some pacing, to make sure I'm really on my game and we have full attention for every speller on there".

She said she struggled with the "ae" because that's not normally seen in German.

While kids participating in the USA spelling bee are spelling convoluted words like "pratincolous" at the moment, it turns out that most of us are still having a hard time spelling words like "beginning" and "probably" correctly. Those spellers remained ideal for a round before Navneeth Murali, 12, of Edison, N.J., spelled incorrectly "gelinotte".

A second New Jersey student, Navneeth Murali of Edison, made it to the finals and landed in fifth place after misspelling the word "gelinotte", which is a European woodland grouse.
