White House Economic Adviser: Canada's Trudeau 'Stabbed Us In The Back'

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

Kudlow went on to assert that Trump's continued tariff threats against Canada on Saturday were a show of toughness ahead of the president's meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

But Mr. Trudeau also said it was "kind of insulting" the US had imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum under the guise of national security, noting Canadians stood "shoulder to shoulder" with Americans in overseas wars.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro lit into Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday, saying there's a "special place in hell" for a world leader that double crosses U.S. President Donald Trump.

He contrasted Trudeau's behavior during the meetings, which he characterized as "so meek and mild" with him calling the tariffs "kind of insulting" and saying Canada "will not be pushed around" after the president left.

In her first takeaway from the contentious meeting, Merkel expressed consternation about the US president's backtracking on the summit's final statement, while emphasizing that she'll keep talking with Trump.

Minutes after the publication of a joint communique that was approved by Trump and other Group of Seven leaders at a summit in the city of Quebec, the U.S. leader announced on Twitter that he was retracting his support. "We believe that trade is win-win, and we believe that our economic relationship with the United States is mutually beneficial and reciprocal", she said separately, adding: "We are aware, however, the U.S. - This current administration has a different paradigm".

Internationally, one European diplomat says the rest of the G7 will carry on despite the president's online attack against Trudeau and his decision to pull out of the final G7 communique.

Moving onto tariffs, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced Trump's plan to slap hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on key USA trading partners. Now there is a question mark over that.

"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said when asked about Trump's U-turn. Reneging on the commitments agreed in the communique showed "incoherence and inconsistency", it said in a statement.

He said: "International co-operation can not depend on being angry and on sound bites. Let's be serious", the French official, speaking on condition of anonymity, added.

"This is of great concern to the G7".

Kudlow suggested the PM had taken a "cheap shot" for his domestic audience when the two parties "were very close to making a deal with Canada on NAFTA - bilaterally, perhaps".

It was all smiles during a photo opportunity at the G7 Summit. "That makes it even more important for Europe to stand together and defend its interests even more decisively", Mass wrote on Twitter.

In a news conference after the summit, the Canadian leader had reasserted his opposition to the U.S. tariffs, and vowed to press ahead with retaliatory moves on 1 July.
