Trump says North Korea is returning U.S. remains

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump shake hands at their meeting on Sentosa Island in Singapore on June 12

President Donald Trump returned from his Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with an apparent new respect for the dictator's control over his people.

The interaction prompted disbelief among some Trump critics, who already have said the president appeared too accommodating to Kim and his autocratic regime, which is accused of gross human rights violations.

President Donald Trump held an impromptu interview and gaggle on the White House north lawn Friday.

"Shinzo, you don't have this problem, but I can send you 25 million Mexicans and you'll be out of office very soon", Trump said, according to the official.

"You know why? Because I don't want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family", Trump responded.

Those comments come after a different Fox News interview earlier this week, when the president also downplayed Kim's human rights record.

Trump told Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy that what Comey did during the 2016 email probe was "criminal" and a "terrible thing", in contrast to findings by the department's inspector general Michael Horowitz in a report released Thursday. He declared the summit a success that would lead to denuclearization and he praised the North Korean leader, calling him "very talented".

Combined forces of South Korea and the United States have conducted their joint war games, which the DPRK has denounced as a rehearsal for northward invasion, twice a year in spring and fall, respectively.

"I met a general", Trump said on Fox.

In also expressing a desire to eventually remove the 28,500 American troops stationed on the peninsula, Mr Trump's shift could overturn longstanding USA policy in Asia and has received a cool reception from Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

"We get along very well", he said. I want to have a good relationship with many other countries, he said.

"What did you mean just now when you said you wished Americans would sit up at attention?" a reporter asked.

"We have a really great relationship [with North Korea] for the first time ever, no president's ever had this", he said. We are afraid to sing, say, wear, or think what we want.

Adm Harris voiced optimism in Washington, noting peace with North Korea is now possible, after a shift in landscape following the Trump-Kim summit.

Mr. Trump on Friday also said Michael Cohen is no longer his lawyer, although he didn't elaborate on that much.
