United Nations ready to support process of North Korea’s denuclearization - Secretary General

China wants UN Security Council to lift sanctions on North Korea

The Singapore summit capped a swift and astonishing turn of events that began on New Year's Day with a pledge by Kim to reach out to the world now that his nuclear forces have been completed.

Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the US invasion of Iraq.

Such verification would include a declaration by North Korea of its nuclear weapons, related facilities and fissile materials to a verification organization like the IAEA.

Bilateral trade has plunged in recent months as China ratcheted up enforcement of the increasingly tough restrictions ordered over the North's missile and nuclear weapons tests.

At times, the video appeared to address Kim directly, suggesting he could make a choice that would open North Korea to new investment and step into a starring role in a moment in history with Trump.

"The world will see a major change", the North Korean leader said.

Sceptics of how much the meeting achieved pointed to the North Korean leadership's long-held view that nuclear weapons are a bulwark against what it fears are United States plans to overthrow it and unite the Korean Peninsula.

"This is a major win for (North Korea), which of course wants to weaken the US-South Korea alliance and eventually send the US troops home", Dr Roy said.

In the same year, South Korea also halted a separate tour programme to North Korea's western border city of Kaesong, said the report.

Mike Pompeo, the U.S. secretary of state, has landed at Osan Air Base south of Seoul and is now due to have meetings with America's allies in the aftermath of the summit. Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

Kim has portrayed the switch as a natural next step now that he has what he stresses is a credible and viable nuclear arsenal capable of keeping the U.S.at bay.

Critics say that his agreement with the North lacks specific restraints on Kim's government and that he offered to end joint military exercises with South Korea with little in return.

Mr Pompeo will then meet South Korean president Moon Jae-in on Thursday morning to discuss the summit.

He was accompanied by Singapore's foreign and education ministers - with whom he posed for selfies - and surrounded by officials as police held back pursuing reporters. Japan and South Korea have large US military presences in their countries. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government.

Neither the issue of military drills nor lifting sanctions was mentioned in the statement.
