DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen Defends Separation Of Families At The Border

Donald Trump's family separations bedevil GOP as public outrage grows

Criticism of Trump's "zero tolerance" approach toward border crossings expanded rapidly over the weekend.

"These children have been traumatized on their trip up to the border, and the first thing that happens is we take away the one constant in their life that helps them buffer all these terrible experiences", Kraft said on CNN Monday. However, there is no law mandating the separation of families.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, former first lady Laura Bush, wife of the previous Republican president, George W. Bush, said she lives in a border state and appreciates the need to enforce and protect the USA borders. "It breaks my heart". She says past administrations asked immigration agents to look the other way when families crossed the border illegally, but no longer.

"We do not separate breastfeeding children from their parents", the DHS official said.

The top United Nations human rights official on Monday slammed the Trump administration's policy as "unconscionable".

In a speech Monday to the National Sheriffs' Association in New Orleans - a few hours after her tweet - Nielsen said the administration would "not apologize" for doing its job.

Congress creates the law, and the White House enforces it, she reminded reporters.

But the President himself has repeatedly blamed Democrats, citing an unspecified law that he says requires children to be taken from parents who cross the border illegally.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions detailed the "zero-tolerance" policy in a speech on May 7, saying immigrants who illegally enter the US along the Mexican border would be prosecuted criminally.

Trump lashed out at his Cabinet, and Nielsen in particular, when told that the number of people arrested for illegally crossing the Mexico border topped 50,000 for the second consecutive month. But in the meantime, he said, "The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility".

I think she's finally been fully Trumpified. "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border".

Nielsen added: "It's not a policy".

"You have many people in the Trump administration denying that they're using this as some sort of political leverage", NPR's Scott Detrow reports.

"I'm looking at both of them", Trump told Fox News.

The Republican-led House of Representatives may vote next week on two immigration measures - a hard-line bill drafted by House Judiciary chairman Bob Goodlatte, and a compromise measure that limits legal immigration while also ending the family separations. She challenged members of Congress to pass legislation if they want to see a change, even though the increase in forced family separations was set in motion by an executive action implemented by the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security.

What happens to the children?

.

Nielsen noted that it is common in all criminal matters that children do not go to jail with their parents, without noting that in most cases, those parents do not return from jail to find their kids transferred to the custody of another government agency and have to figure out how to get those kids back. "And it can be taken care of quickly, beautifully, and we'll have safety".

Southwest Key Programs, a company that recently made headlines after an OR senator was denied entry at one of its facilities in Brownsville, Texas, is one of the largest operators in Texas.

Previously, families crossing the border together would normally be released into the US with an order to appear in immigration court. "I think what you saw in Tornillo was the manifestation of a bad policy of separating kids from their families", said Hurd, whose district includes a large swath along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Sessions has also vowed to prosecute any fraudulent applications for asylum.

"If you cross the border unlawfully. we will prosecute you", Sessions said at the time.

"As (GOP Rep. Steve Scalise) said, it is an issue that every one of the last four administration has faced. Since this time previous year, there has been a 325 percent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 percent increase in family units entering the country illegally". And they expanded access to immigration detention centers, where families were held with their children while they were awaiting immigration hearings. We give them education. That's when they were separated.

But they did not prosecute those migrants criminally. "What's different now is that this administration is choosing to separate children from their parents". Immigration hawks have blasted that policy as "catch and release", because immigrants can often flee, fail to show up for their hearings and stay in the USA illegally.
