England vs Australia: England clinch their biggest ODI win at Nottingham

Alex Halels averages 73.50 from five innings at Trent Bridge including a knock of 171 against New Zealand two years ago

In reply, Travis Head scored a fluent half-century but Australia were bowled out for just 239 as England sealed an emphatic 242-run victory.

The 31-year-old returned figures of 0-100 off nine overs, making him only the second Aussie to leak a century of runs in a one-day global.

England posted the highest total ever scored in a men's one-day global of 481 for six as they thrashed Australia by 242 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in a five-match series.

England's openers set a remarkable tempo, and Australia had no answer as Tim Paine deployed eight different bowlers in the first 24 overs - to no avail. Bairstow and Hales struck 139 and 147 respectively, both taking only 92 balls to do so. D'Arcy Short carved David Willey's first ball for six and his second for four, while Travis Head brushed off a painful blow from a Mark Wood bouncer (Wood exceeded 91 miles per hour in that first spell) to help Australia keep up with the rate for the first 12 overs.

England have not played an ODI in Durham since 2015 but their recent record in the north-east is good having won five of their last six completed matches there. The only disappointment was that they failed to go beyond the 500-run barrier after some late wickets fell. In a series of social media posts, Ganguly wrote, "To see nearly 500 runs scored in 50 overs in England is scaring me, bout the health of the game and where it's going".

"They are red hot at the moment", he said.

Paine, who took charge in South Africa after the infamous Cape Town Test, said it was the hardest day of cricket he has had to endure. Today it was a learning experience.

"It was tough, no matter where we put the field they hit the gaps".

"I've got massive respect for England and the way they are playing their cricket", said Langer. The fact that the other is his opening partner, Jason Roy, demonstrates how the game has developed and how England have been at the vanguard of that change.

Bairstow was dropped on 30 by Marcus Stoinis and that proved extremely costly as he began to pepper the boundary.

It was off Australia's eighth bowler, left-arm wrist spinner D'Arcy Short, that Bairstow hit a huge six over deep midwicket to reach a 69-ball hundred including 11 fours and four sixes.
