Mexico dominates in match against South Korea, wins 2-1

With a 2-0 lead in the second half, El Tri faithful took to chanting "Profe Osorio" in support of the team's Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who before the tournament had been heavily criticized by pundits and a football-loving public for his tactics and management of the national team.

Mexico moved one step closer to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 as they claimed a 2-1 win over Korea Republic in Group F on Saturday.

The goal was Hernandez's fourth at a World Cup, taking him to the same level as Luis Hernandez as Mexico's most prolific goal scorer at the premier worldwide soccer tournament.

Mexico, which upset defending champion Germany in its opening match, took the lead when Vela converted from the penalty spot in the 26th minute. El Tri's form, confidence and collective spirit in Russian Federation surprised everyone in its World Cup opener, and Juan Carlos Osorio's team won't pass up the chance to announce itself as Group F's team to beat when it faces South Korea. "We have humility but we beat Germany and South Korea and now we have to play against Sweden and stay cool and calm", goalscorer Hernandez said.

Hernandez's 50th goal for Mexico proved to be the match-winner.

"We want the Mexican people to enjoy this". The Mexicans were awarded the penalty after Jang Hyun-soo handled the ball while trying to stop a cross from Andres Guardado.

South Korea wanted a penalty of their own after the restart when Moon Seon-min's strike clipped Carlos Salcedo's arm, but the referee correctly waved away the team's appeals.

Carlos Vela got the Mexicans on their way at the Rostov Arena with a 26th-minute penalty, before Javier Hernandez wrapped up the three points with a second six minutes after the hour mark.

Conditioned by the dry heat that has been a feature of every game at the Rostov Arena, Mexico did not quite have the same thrust and energy as against Germany although they still controlled most of the play and looked far more risky.

Son Heung-min scored a consolation goal for South Korea in injury time, sending a powerful shot past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico made it two wins out of two as they edged out South Korea in their Group F match against South Korea in Rostov. But history was not on Mexico's side because it had not won back-to-back matches at a World Cup since 2002.

South Korea threatened again nine minutes later, Son breaking clear of Mexico's line before letting rip with a low drive that Hector Moreno did well to keep out.
