Swiss players investigated over 'double-headed eagle' goal celebrations at World Cup

W.C: Xhaka, Shaqiri in hot water after controversial celebrations

But the pro-Kosovo "double eagle" gesture flashed by Swiss goal-scorers Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri shows that honouring another nation after the ball crosses the line can ruffle some feathers.

The players' celebrations in the 2-1 win over Serbia in Kaliningrad on Friday caused outrage in Serbia.

However, Shaqiri and Xhaka caused a bit of controversy with their goal celebrations that is believed to similar to the eagle flag of Albania, which could cause political tensions in the Balkans.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committe has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss player Stephan Lichtsteiner for a goal celebration during the match Switzerland vs Serbia.

The duo could miss Switzerland's crucial last Group E encounter against Costa Rica in Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday (June 27) as the alleged offence carries an automatic two-match ban under FIFA's disciplinary rules.

Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's independence and relations between the two countries remain tense.

Head coach Mladen Krstajic is also being investigated for statements he made in the aftermath of the game.

Shaqiri and Xhaka are both ethnic Albanians and Shaqiri was born in the Kosovan city of Gjilan.

Koeppel, who helped bring President Donald Trump's former strategist Steve Bannon to an SVP rally in Zurich, also labelled Swiss players of African descent "ensuisses", a demeaning term that questions their ties to Switzerland.

For its part, the Serbian Football Federation was fined 54,000 Swiss francs [46,700 euros] for "discriminatory banners" displayed by its fans and objects thrown.

"It's just emotion", Shaqiri said of his celebration. Shaqiri was more terse: "I do not play politics, I play football", he said.

It is unclear what the investigation into Krstajic refers to, but in comments to Serbian reporters on Saturday, he said of match referee Felix Brych: "I wouldn't give him either a yellow or red card, I would send him to The Hague. I'd like to see that again. presumably Xhaka was not unhappy at not having scored against Albania", he said. They noted that Shaqiri wore boots carrying flags of both Switzerland and Kosovo.

Serbia has refused to recognize Kosovo's independence, which was won after North Atlantic Treaty Organisation intervened militarily in 1999, launching airstrikes against Serb forces battling separatists in the province and bombing targets as far away as the Serbian capital, Belgrade.
