Serena Williams awarded seeding for Wimbledon

Tennis Serena Williams seeded 25th for Wimbledon despite low world ranking

Twenty-three-time Grand Slam victor Williams gave birth to her daughter Alexis in September and she returned to action in February having missed over a year out since winning the 2017 Australian Open.

When Williams left the tour during her pregnancy she was ranked No1 in the world - she won the Australian Open in her first trimester - but a player's seeding is not protected during maternity leave.

The All England Club usually follows the WTA ranking list, but reserves the right to make a change if it "is necessary to produce a balanced draw".

While she enjoys a protected ranking and can enter the grand slams without having to qualify, that does not automatically mean she can also be handed a seeded position.

One effect of Williams' being seeded at the All England Club: The 32nd-ranked Dominika Cibulkova, a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist and the 2014 Australian Open runner-up, will not benefit from a seeding and could play anyone in the field in the first round.

In the men's draw, after Federer and Nadal, 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic is No. 3, followed by Alexander Zverev and Juan Martin del Potro.

The US Open Grand Slam in NY has said it will update its seeding policy to take into account a player returning from a pregnancy.

Novak Djokovic is No. 12, Britain's Kyle Edmund is seeded No. 22 and French Open surprise Marco Cecchinato is No. 31.

"Why should I not be seeded if I have the right to be?"

Former champion Andy Murray, however, misses out on a seeding as he continues his comeback from hip surgery. The Slovakian would have taken the last seeded spot but instead goes into the open draw.

"I don't think it's the right thing to do", Cibulkova told British broadcaster BBC ahead of Wednesday's seeding announcement.

"But it's just not fair if there is a player [who misses out] and it's me now. Maybe not in time for me, but for the next person", she said. I have tried and I should be seeded.

Wimbledon doesn't start until July 2, but new mom Serena Williams has already scored a victory.
