Protesters march against Trump's immigration policy

Protesters, lawmaker arrested in U.S. Senate building over immigration

She and other protesters were charged with unlawful demonstration, a charge that includes crowding or obstructing others in a public place.

Trump later signed an order ending the separation of families but immigration lawyers say the process of reuniting children and their parents will be long and chaotic.

She has since been joined by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who told radio station WYNC, "You need some kind of agency to deal with immigration, but ICE is not that"; and by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, also of New York, who in a tweet called ICE "a cruel deportation force".

Trump is spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and won't be home during the protest.

Buzzfeed reported that five immigrant children in federal custody filed a lawsuit Friday against what they called the Trump administration's "cruel policies and practices that unlawfully prolong their detention and delay their reunification with their families".

"As a woman and as a mother, I refuse to stay silent as parents on the border are separated from their kids", said Tamika Mallory, co-chair of the Women's March, who was one of those arrested.

Some state representatives say children should not be separated from their parents under such circumstances.

"We have three main demands", said Anna Galland, the executive director for MoveOn.org, which is co-sponsoring the event.

"I think that every American, Republican and Democrat, just has to try and imagine what that looks like, to have a six-month-old baby taken from your breast", she said. She said the policy indicates the country has "no morals", adding that "the GOP claims to be pro-life but is stealing babies from their family". Demonstrators in white clergy robes linked arms across the street and chanted "reunite", others waving signs that bore slogans, among them, "Stop separating families".

People across many major towns and cities in the U.S. had been urged to gather under the slogan #familiesbelongtogether.

But the Trump administration points out that most of those migrants never showed up for court.

More than 2,000 children who arrived illegally in the United States with adult relatives were separated from them and placed in detention facilities or with foster families around the United States. Crowds gathered in sweltering 86-degree morning heat at a Manhattan park before a planned march across the Brooklyn Bridge to Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn, near the federal courthouse.

"Do you know where our children are?" one protester's sign there asked. "I cried", said Adelmund, whose event drew about 125 people.

The protests challenge the separation of what protesters describe as separation of children from families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

"To finally have people on board wanting to take action, marching, taking to the streets", Ms Rivas said.

San Francisco: Protesters will start at Mission Dolores Park at 10 a.m. and will march to the Civic Center, 355 McAllister St., where they will rally at 11 a.m.
