Iniesta retires from international football

Andres Iniesta has announced that he will retire from global football after seeing Spain crash out of the World Cup at the hands of Russian Federation.

'This was my last game for Spain, ' Iniesta told reporters. Sometimes the end is not as you dreamed it.

The 34-year-old, who scored the winning goal at the 2010 World Cup final, won 133 caps in an global career spanning 12 years, during which he also won European championship titles in 2008 and 2012. 'A marvellous spell is over.

"On a personal level, it wasn't my dream farewell, but these things happen in life".

Iniesta said he had no complaints about being left on the bench by coach Fernando Hierro, before being brought on during the second half.

The Spanish King, he said, congratulated the Russian president on Team Russia's win in today's game and they advancing to the quarterfinals.

Spain captain Ramos, who said it was "very hard" to take his country's "painful" World Cup exit, did not address his own future plans but said he was sure his national side would be back competing for trophies at the next worldwide tournaments.

Rewarded with a sponsor's trophy, Akinfeev acknowledged the part played by an 78,000 crowd in Moscow: "I'm not the man of the match, the man of the match is our team - and our fans". We will be back at big tournaments again.
