Things to know about abortion and the Supreme Court

GOP senator vows to reject SCOTUS nominee who is pro-life, would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade

Trump's initial short list of 25 names of potential nominees was largely handpicked by The Federalist Society, an influential group of conservative lawyers.

With little more than a week before President Donald Trump announces his nominee to the highest court in the land, Trump sought to downplay some of his past comments about making opposition to legalized abortion a litmus test for his Supreme Court nominees. "If we put another two or perhaps three justices on, that's really what's going to be, that's what will happen automatically, because I am putting pro-life justices on court", he said during one of the debates.

The poll also showed 63 percent of respondents agreed with the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that established a woman's right to an abortion, and 31 percent disagree. Americans for Prosperity planned to spend millions on pressuring vulnerable Democrats or Republicans who are on the fence about a potential nominee. In an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Collins said Trump's current list includes people she "could not vote for".

Abortion is not the only key issue Nelson worries about with a new Supreme Court justice.

Similarly, Justice Neil Gorsuch, who Trump nominated to the Court previous year, is widely seen as a pro-life conservative.

Trump plans to announce his choice to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the high court on July 9. "So a nominee's position on whether or not they respect precedent will tell me a lot about whether they would overturn Roe v. Wade".

"I had a very, very interesting morning", Trump said as he greeted visiting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the Oval Office.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME, an abortion rights supporter, is considered one of the key votes on a nominee. And I would tell my pro-life friends, you can be pro-life and conservative, but you can also believe in stare decisis [letting legal precedent stand].

"So I'm actually quite happy about it", he said.

In April 2017, Collins joined her Republican colleagues in a party-line 52-48 vote to change Senate rules so that Supreme Court nominees need only a simple majority rather than a supermajority of 60 votes to be confirmed, a move that gives minority Democrats little hope to prevent a vote.

"I'm going to have an in-depth conversation with the nominee and I believe very much that Roe v. Wade is settled law as it has been described by Chief Justice [John] Roberts", Collins said. "If you have somebody who has a record, for instance William Pryor, that it was an abomination, Roe v. Wade, that's clearly going to set off alarm bells", Wallace said.
