Park beats Ryu, Hataoko in playoff to win KPMG Women's PGA

Lydia Ko shot eight birdies to get back in contention at the Women's PGA Championship

So it was an understandable moment of relief, then, when her 10-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole found the mark, seeing off compatriot So Yeon Ryu.

Hataoka and the South Koreans each finished 72 holes at Kemper Lakes deadlocked at 10-under par 278.

Park just missed a birdie on that hole when her 20-footer hit the edge of the cup.

Sung Hyun Park raised her arms and placed her hands on her head before hugging her caddie and wiping away tears.

"This is my first time feeling this kind of emotion, " the 24-year-old Seoul native said through an interpreter. "I can't still believe what I've done, but I'm really happy". "All the hard work paid off and that's what made me cry".

July 1 Aditi Ashok endured one of her roughest days as a professional golfer when she went 9-over 81 in the third round of KPMG Women's PGA Championship here.

Yet after a hard year, it was Park's day. Against a playoff and with a memorable shot beside a pond that was reminiscent of fellow South Korean Se Ri Pak's storied shot from the water to force a playoff in 1998 to win the U.S. Women's Open. Park also shared the Player of the Year honors with Ryu, becoming the first rookie since Nancy Lopez in 1979 to win these three individual titles.

Hataoka was completely off the radar when the round started with a 54-hole score of two under par.

Both Ryu and Park left themselves with birdie putts at the par-4 18th, but both narrowly missed the attempt that would have sealed the title.

But Ryu bounced back with consecutive birdies of her own at the sixth and seventh, which took her back to 11-under, two up on Park.

Park's ball landed on a big tuft of grass.

After watching the play unfold, Ryu calmly drained her lengthy birdie putt to reach 12-under par.

So Yeon Ryu hits her tee shot on the 7th hole during the second round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship golf tournament at Kemper Lakes Golf Club.

Ko added further bogeys at the 10th, 17th and 18th to offset just the sole birdie over her back nine, at the par-4 16th.

Park said she'd never executed a shot like that, but she didn't doubt she could pull it off.

"I think I had a bit of confidence coming into this week because of the two top-10 finishes these couple weeks, and I felt like I was driving it pretty good and rolling it good", Ko said. Yin said. "I don't need to say much". (But) I wasn't nervous at all. "I was even joking", Park said.

The 13th hole saw Ryu open the door for her competition with a bogey.

Hataoka recorded two eagles in her round and put a number on the leaderboard that likely got the attention of Park and Ryu.
