China rejects 'blackmail' on eve of United States tariff hike

China Warns US'Opening Fire On World With Tariff Threats

And they say the current United States economic strength, as well as America's soaring trade deficit in goods, means the world's largest economy can outlast its rivals in the current tit-for-tat battle, presenting Washington with a rare window of opportunity to settle old scores.

Washington-based think tank the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) expects USA tariffs on Chinese goods, which it says particularly target computers and electronics, to hurt multinationals more than China as well as other firms in Asia.

"After the United States introduced the new tariffs, China's reciprocal measures also immediately took effect", said the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Lu Kang.

Beijing called the new stage of the confrontation - which began when Washington pulled the trigger on 25 per cent duties on US$34 billion annual imports of Chinese machinery, electronics and other goods - "the largest trade war in economic history".

It added that instead of "serving the interests of USA companies and people, the move will prove to be counter-productive and damaging".

"This kind of tariff is a typical trade bullying", the statement said, "which is seriously jeopardizing the global industrial chain and value chain security, hindering the pace of global economic recovery, triggering global market turmoil, and will affect more innocent multinational corporations, general enterprises and ordinary countries".

The European Union, India, China and Russian Federation all have applied to the World Trade Organization to challenge the USA tariffs, which mostly took effect March 23.

The US on Friday slapped tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports to combat what is says are the country's unfair trade practices.

The two countries have engaged increasingly in verbal sparring in recent months, but Friday's pair of haymakers has dramatically escalated the trade dispute - and that has investors across the world worries about what comes next.

"Generally speaking we're not going to get caught up in the tariffs the United States is applying to China because we have a different export profile", said Jacobi, who is executive director of the NZ International Business Forum.

Retaliatory measures by China also include taxes on imports of a variety of USA dairy products.

He described the potential escalation to reporters aboard Air Force One: "Thirty-four, and then you have another 16 in two weeks and then, as you know, we have 200 billion in abeyance and then after the 200 billion we have 300 billion in abeyance. OK?"

The US trade deficit in goods with China ballooned to a record $375.2-billion past year, further stoking Trump's ire.

Trump's tariffs on the EU, Canada and Mexico are for as much as 25% on imports of steel and aluminium, which the USA has imposed on grounds of national security. "Of the original $50 billion in tariffs on China, items including lithium batteries, navigation devices, disk drives and circuit board components will be affected - hitting $15.2 billion worth of Chinese imports".

One, if Chinese steel cannot find its way into the USA, it could be dumped on other markets, triggering protective tariffs.

China said it would respond with measures of a "corresponding number and quality" if the U.S. produced a list of products that could be hit.

While both governments were fighting fiercely, netizens in both China and the United States focused their attention on a cargo ship, Peak Pegasus.

A full-fledged trade war, economists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and elsewhere warn, risks tipping the US economy into recession.

China retaliated with tariffs on a similar amount of goods.

There was no evidence of last-minute negotiations between USA and Chinese officials, business sources in Washington and Beijing said.

China also promised that it would respond with trade restrictions of its own to counteract Trump's decision.
