US President lists Russia, EU, China as 'foes' ahead of Putin summit

Asked to name the U.S.'s "biggest foe globally" in an interview conducted Saturday and aired Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation", Trump turned first to the European Union, saying "we have a lot of foes".

Last week at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Trump launched a fresh attack on Germany, claiming the country was "totally controlled" and held "captive by Russia" thanks to a gas pipeline deal which the president grossly misrepresented the importance of to Germany's energy needs.

"I think we have a lot of foes", the USA leader told CBS News in an interview broadcast Sunday that was taped the day before at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland. "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade", Trump said on CBS's "Face the Nation". "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade".

He continued: "Russia is a foe in certain respects". But that doesn't mean they're bad. It doesn't mean anything. "They want to do well and we want to do well", he added.

"Don't forget both of my parents were born in European Union sectors, OK?" I mean my mother was Scotland, my father was Germany.

"You know I love those countries".

Trump was referring to a new natural gas pipeline between Germany, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, and Russian Federation, the country that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies push back against. "I respect the leaders of those countries", Trump said.

"The people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition", Trump tweeted in the midst of a row within the German goverment.

He reiterated a criticism he made of Germany during a tense North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Brussels last week, namely that the country should not have agreed to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project with Russian Federation. Trump departed for Helsinki on Sunday evening after spending the day playing golf at his private club in Scotland. "Sue the European Union, not go into negotiations, sue them", she said. "Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news", Mr Tusk wrote on Twitter.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, dismissed Trump's attack on European countries, saying, "America and the EU are best friends". Asked in a BBC interview Sunday what that was, May responded with an amused expression: "He told me I should sue the EU".

Trump repeated his previous assertion that the European Union has "really taken advantage of us on trade".

According to Trump, the pipeline deal has generated "a lot of anger" for Germany, and it won't even be good for the country in the long run anyway.
