Why is Rand Paul, of all people, Trump's biggest defender on Russia?

'An absolute disgrace': Republicans blast Trump for his 'disgusting' press conference with Putin

In a statement today Mr Trump said he meant to say "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia".

Fellow GOP politicians have generally stuck with Trump during a year and a half of turmoil, but he was assailed as seldom before as he returned home Monday night from what he had hoped would be a proud summit with Putin.

Paul says, "I think these people are mistaken".

USA intelligence officials have said the Kremlin was behind the effort to help Trump defeat Clinton, and Mueller tied the hack to the Russian government by identifying the culprits as officers in a Russian military intelligence agency known as the GRU.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Trump had made the United States look like "a pushover" and said the president's remarks "saddened" him.

Other Republicans called Trump's remarks "outrageous", "an absolute disgrace", and "moronic".

The New York Times says Trump's comments drew "howls of protests from Democrats and some Republicans", and prompted John O. Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director under Barack Obama, "to suggest that the remarks warranted Mr. Trump's impeachment".

"Our nation's top intelligence agencies all agree on that point", he said. "So you can put that in, and I think that probably clarifies things", he said.

Trump's reference to his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation performance carried an edge, too, since the barrage of criticism and insults he delivered there was not generally well-received.

Why did Trump take Putin's side?
"Recall also that some of the people hacked by GRU [Russia's military intelligence agency] agents were aware of that server and mentioned it in messages they sent, so that the Russians too were aware of it". "I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", he said.

Standing beside Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Trump declined to criticize Russian Federation for meddling and said he doesn't see why Russian Federation would have done that.

"A single, ominous question now hangs over the White House: what could possibly cause President Trump to put the interests of Russian Federation over those of the United States".

President Trump said Tuesday that not only was his meeting with Vladimir Putin great - it was "even better" than one he had a few days prior with America's security alliance.

Observers across the board acknowledged that Trump's performance was a stunning display of supplication to the authoritarian leader. It came just three days after 12 Russian intelligence officials were indicted in the USA for cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

"Zero collusion", Trump said.

"The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally", Ryan continued.

Hindustan Times, owned by HT Media Ltd, is one of India's largest publications that provides unbiased news, analysis and features on politics, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and more. "What they did was a direct attack on our democracy". US intelligence agencies have concluded Russian Federation did interfere, but the Kremlin has denied state involvement.

Reading from a prepared statement, he said he meant to say he didn't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russian Federation.

"Don't hold [the relationship] hostage because of this internal political struggle", Putin said.

'It was nothing short of treasonous.
