After backlash, Trump says misspoke on Russian election meddling

Donald Trump

Trump made the comments in a series of early morning tweets after his highly criticized meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland and his visit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries. Among other things, Trump refused to denounce Putin and Russian Federation for interfering in the 2016 presidential election and attacked special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's probe, calling it a "disaster" for the country.

"In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word ´would´ instead of ´wouldn´t´", Trump said, speaking at the White House ahead of a meeting with Republican lawmakers. "Sort of a double negative", he said.

Even if it was a mere grammatical glitch, Trump made plenty of other comments in the same Helsinki news conference that gave Russian Federation the benefit of the doubt. "The president did a good thing by meeting with Putin", Senator Rand Paul told CBS' "This Morning" program, comments that won him public thanks from Trump on Twitter.

Braun's statement avoided any challenge to the US intelligence community conclusion that Russian Federation interfered in the election. "A lot of people out there".

"Oops, they just turned off the light", Trump joked.

Some Republicans have come to Trump's defense.

Mr Wilson said as things stand, Republicans will be sticking with Mr Trump as their 2020 presidential candidate despite their differences with their leader.

John McCain, the senior Republican senator, said Trump's seeming acceptance of Putin's denial was a historical "low point" for the U.S. presidency.

President Donald Trump says on Twitter that Russian Federation has pledged to help in high-stakes negotiations with North Korea, but he's giving no details on how and when that might lead to removal of the North's nuclear armaments. "I think even President George W. Bush's meeting, where he had that famous quote about looking into Putin's eyes and seeing into his soul - this summit dwarfs that by a factor of a thousand".

Democrats are demanding action to rein in Trump and counter Russia, from congressional hearings on the Helsinki summit to increased sanctions against Russia to legislation protecting the special counsel in the Russia investigation, Robert Mueller.

He said then that he "briefed President Trump about these allegations earlier this week".

KIRO Radio's Dori Monson could have a new career in store as a speech-writer for President Trump.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., talks to reporters.

Trump still refused to publically condemn the Russian president and even suggested other parties may also be involved in election meddling.
