Federal Bureau of Investigation has secret tape of Trump talking payment to model

Stormy Daniels’ lawyer again demands release of Cohen’s alleged Trump tapes following NYT report

Mr Trump tweeted that such a raid was "almost unheard of".

Trump's tweet followed news Friday that Cohen, the president's one-time fixer, secretly recorded a conversation in which he and Trump discussed payments to former Playboy model Karen McDougal who claimed to have had an affair with Trump. Rudy Giuliani, Mr Trump's current lawyer, confirmed the veracity of the tape, which he said was less than two minutes long.

Friday's reports raised questions about why Trump's campaign denied knowledge of the deal between McDougal and American Media when it became public, and they fanned speculation about how much damage Cohen might be able to inflict on the president.

Trump was responding to the revelation that former attorney Michael Cohen, weeks before the 2016 election, secretly recorded their discussion of a potential payment for a former Playboy model's account of having an affair with Trump.

On Saturday, Trump appeared to slam both the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid and Cohen's behavior as "inconceivable". "We have no knowledge of any of this", Hope Hicks, the campaign spokeswoman, said at the time, adding that McDougal's claim of an affair was "totally untrue".

"In the big scheme of things, it's powerful exculpatory evidence", he added. But if it turns out that there were multiple payments to women for the goal of aiding the Trump presidential campaign, which was formally launched on June 16, 2015, and those payments were not disclosed as campaign contributions, both the Federal Election Commission and the Department of Justice could potentially pursue claims against Trump and Cohen.

NY is a "one-party consent" state, meaning that in general, it is legal to record a conversation as long as at least one party agrees, even if that person is the one doing the recording.

Trump and Cohen discussed the possible payment after AMI bought the rights to McDougal's story for $150,000 in August 2016.

What has Trump previously said?

The New Yorker magazine reported in February that Trump had an affair with McDougal at the same time he had a relationship with porn star Stormy Daniels and that the National Enquirer prevented McDougal's story being made public. Presumably Trump and Cohen wanted to take over the rights to the tape so that they could be sure about the scandal staying on the down low.

Davis said "any attempt at spin can not change what is on the tape".

Cohen was one of Donald Trump's most loyal allies, but Cohen still protected himself.

The woman has claimed she had an affair with Trump.

Michael Cohen and Donald Trump.

"It's pretty clear from the tape, it's the first time Trump is finding out".

But the supermarket tabloid did not publish her kiss-and-tell, and she had said she was tricked.

The FBI obtained a warrant to raid his properties in April as part of a federal criminal investigation into whether Cohen committed wire fraud, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations while working for Trump.

Non-disclosure agreements of the type signed by Ms Daniels and allegedly by Ms McDougal are not in themselves illegal.
