Armed standoff at Los Angeles Trader Joe's: 1 dead

Pursuit ends in hostage situation at LA grocery store

Around 1:30 p.m., police spotted the suspect driving his grandmother's vehicle in the Hollywood area and a pursuit began.

Los Angeles police identified a gunman Sunday suspected of holding hostages inside a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake that resulted in the death of a woman.

Atkin's grandmother was left in critical condition in the earlier attack on Saturday, police said.

Police Chief Michael Moore earlier said the man shot his grandmother seven times and she had undergone a series of surgeries at a local hospital.

Melyda Corado, 27, had worked at the grocery store for four years and was there Saturday when a deranged, still-unidentified man - who'd just led police on a vehicle chase - crashed into a utility pole in front of the supermarket and ran inside brandishing his weapon.

The suspect apparently crashed his auto into the store, opened fire at the officers following him, the rushed inside the store. There was no update on her condition on Sunday, they said.

Lopez said customers ran out of the Trader Joe's. The gunman fled from cops and took the second female victim with him.

"We have successfully taken the suspect into custody without incident", the LAPD tweeted, saying officers were "clearing the location". He ran into the exit door of the Trader Joe's, looked back at the street and saw two police officers shooting at a man, he said. He added that several law enforcement officers and rescue crews were able to rescue a number of people through other entry points at the store. Authorities are trying to communicate with the suspect to try to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion, police said.

Police said the older woman was the suspect's grandmother, and he was driving her vehicle when he wrecked it near the Trader Joe's.

Police officers use a mirror to see inside a Trader Joe's store in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on Saturday.

Aerial video showed officers carrying a injured person of the store and carrying children out from the store to safety. When police tried to stop the auto a chase ensued, officials said.

Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated police and firefighters for their work and mourned the loss of life at the Trader Joe's, where he and his wife regularly shopped when they lived in the neighborhood.

The gunfire shattered the glass doors, Kohles said, and the gunman ran inside and "down the middle aisle". Once inside the supermarket, the suspect took customers and employees hostage "and held them against their will", said Moore. "We appreciate everything Los Angeles law enforcement did to ensure an end to this ordeal". Witnesses said patrons and workers remain inside the store. The LAPD tweeted that the incident began as a "pursuit" that ended in "an officer involved shooting". "Employee says blood was all over the floor, unclear from where", he wrote.
