Duck Boat Survivor Cries Over 9 Relatives’ Drowning & Reveals Captain Said They Didn’t Need Life Vests

The Colemans were among 17 people killed when the duck boat capsized and sank in Table Rock Lake in Branson during a storm.

The boat will be taken to a secure location for officials to study it after the deadly incident, the Coast Guard said in an earlier news release. Investigators have retrieved a video recorder from the duck boat that sank and it's been sent to Washington for analysis, and they've also retrieved video from the second duck boat that was on the water at the same time.

A former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday that regardless of weather, the boats should be banned from commercial recreational use.

The boat went down Thursday evening after a thunderstorm generated near-hurricane strength winds.

Divers are expected to swim down and connect the duck boat to a crane, which will then try to lift the boat from where it rests beneath 80 feet of water, according to a Coast Guard official.

Tia Coleman lost her husband, three children, and five other family members in the accident, where investigators are asking why life jackets were on board but not required, the broadcaster said. The only family members who survived the accident were Tia and her 13-year-old nephew.

Coleman, whose three children and husband all drowned, said the captain of the boat told them they would not need life jackets.

"I'm not going to rest until we get something in the law on a national basis that does a better job of regulating the safety of amphibious vehicles", she told CNN on Friday.

The website for a tour company whose boat capsized in Missouri says the business is offering to pay for medical and funeral expenses for those aboard.

U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Scott Stoermer spoke to reporters after the boat was raised Monday morning.

A spokeswoman for Ripley Entertainment, the company operating the duck boats in Branson, did not respond Saturday to telephone and email messages seeking comment.

Hall said there has been "very little movement" in efforts to regulate the industry over the past 20 years, despite multiple accidents and fatalities involving duck boats both on and out of the water. "But of course that's part of what we'll be looking at", NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway told NPR.

McCay says Hamann told him the couple had just gone on a paddle boat and were planning to go again. Normally, the duck boats are operated on calm lakes.

Around 200 people have attended a community memorial service in Branson for the 17 people killed when a duck boat sand in a Missouri Lake. He noted they were originally created to assault beaches in World War II.

"The information that we've gotten so far is that numerous passengers were not wearing [life jackets]".

"Contributing to the high loss of life was a continuous canopy roof that entrapped passengers within the sinking vehicle", the report continued.

Turbulent weather has caused trouble for duck boats before.

Crews were getting ready to hoist it onto a flat bed truck so it could be turned over to the NTSB so the agency could continue its investigation.

"In our family, my oldest son is autistic so a lot of things normal families do, we don't always do", she said. "Thank you for your support, and we ask that your thoughts and prayers be with the families during this time".
