Sony announces 48MP smartphone image sensor, the industry's highest

Sony IMX586 will cram 48 megapixels into smartphone cameras

The sensor is the world's first to feature an ultra-small pixel size of just 0.8μm, which is what allows it to stuff 48-megapixels onto a 1/2-inch sensor. In darker scenes, the data from the sensor simply isn't converted, resulting in a 12-MP effective sensor that Sony says has the light-gathering power of 1.6-µm sensor wells.

A 48-megapixel camera in a phone might sound like a silly idea, but we've seen a couple of examples of high resolution sensors being put to good use in recent smartphones. It could result in poor light collecting efficiency per pixel, accompanied by a drop in sensitivity and volume of saturation signal.

Sony is labelling the new unit "compact" - it measures up at 8millimetres diagonally, meaning phones that adopt it should not have to carry a huge camera bump.

If you're using a relatively recent iPhone, then you're using a Sony sensor when you take a photograph and the Japanese company has today announced a new version of that sensor, this time pushing the resolution higher than ever. According to Sony, the sensor will be ready for sampling this September, and it'll cost device makers around $27 per unit. "The new Sony sensor features 48 effective megapixels, a pixel count which rivals that of high-performance SLR cameras, making it possible to capture attractive, high-resolution images even with a smartphone". Sony's 0.8-micron pixels are now the smallest on the market, however its use of a quad Bayer colour filter array helps each pixel coordinate with those that surround it to essentially create a larger pixel.

Sony exposure control technology and signal processing functionality is built into the chip.

As smartphone's imaging capabilities get better and better, manufacturers like Sony and Samsung will continue to push the boundaries of technology with its own hardware created to make compact devices even more proficient in photography and videography.
