Facebook Bans Infowars’ Alex Jones for 30 Days Over Hate Speech, Bullying

Facebook bans Alex Jones for 30 days | TheHill

"We received reports related to four different videos on the Pages that Infowars and Alex Jones maintain on Facebook", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to The Courant.

Facebook had left the videos up on the grounds that they weren't false enough or threatening enough to violate its community standards. After receiving complaints from Facebook users, four Jones videos were removed from the platform on Thursday. Among the questions posed during the panel concerned such InfoWars conspiracy theories as the so-called "Sandy Hook massacre hoax" and the falsehood that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an inside job.

Facebook has previously issued Jones a notification that he repeatedly violated its policies, and if he continued to do so, he'd be banned for 30 days. The Facebook spokesperson said the pages were "close" to meeting the unspecified threshold of violations that would result in Facebook unpublishing the pages, but that for now the pages had not crossed that line. The suspension does not stop other page administrators from posting to his personal page or the page of Infowars. As of Friday morning, content continued to be posted to both pages. The fourth was reported about one month ago, but Facebook incorrectly determined that it did not violate its community standards at the time. The content of those videos was not immediately made clear.

According to CNET's report, a Facebook spokesperson said that Jones' page "faces a permanent ban from the site" if he and his other admins continue to break Facebook's rules. He demanded that CNN "cease and desist".

The block will apply to Jones' own page - which boasts almost 1.7 million "likes" - as well as others for which he's the "page admin".

A mere matter of days after InfoWars founder Alex Jones received yet another YouTube strike - but wasn't banned - he's been hit with a 30-day block on Facebook.

It's the kind of step YouTube has yet to take against Jones.

Facebook and YouTube acted after weeks of controversy over Jones, who first gained notoriety by insisting that the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were an "inside job" by the USA government. Asked by CNN how they can claim to be serious about tackling the problem of misinformation online while simultaneously allowing InfoWars to maintain a page with almost one million followers, company executives struggled to provide an answer. Zuckerberg later walked back his comments.
