Mars close approach: Get a look at the red planet

Astronomers predict that the Mars will come close to the Earth in 5 years

The next Mars close approach is October 6, 2020, NASA says.

The two planets will be just 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometers) apart next Tuesday.

But some perihelic oppositions bring Earth and Mars closer together than others, the United States space agency said.

This and the 60,000-year gap statement are true, according to the agency, but they represent "a bit of hype" as Mars and Earth have been nearly this close many times in recent history.

Mars will rise in the southeast around sunset and slowly track across the sky throughout the night before setting to the southwest around sunrise, local time.

The planet's close encounter in 2003 made headlines as it was the closest Mars came to Earth in almost 60,000 years, sparking rumors that it would appear as large as the moon. This year, Earth is near its farthest distance from the sun, and Mars is close to its minimum distance to the sun - that puts Earth and Mars very close to each other. This weekend the red planet will be closer, larger and brighter than it has been in 15 years.

While Mars has seemed closer for a while now, it will seem biggest and brightest through the end of the July, since Mars Close Approach is July 31. CU Boulder astronomer Doug Duncan talked to Colorado Matters about how to spot the planet and why it'll be so visible from July 27-31.

Of course, you can always step outside and check out the red planet with your naked eye. "The astronomical term for this is called opposition, and this is the best time to see Mars in a telescope". Only Venus will appear brighter.

It's also a great time for people see the planet from here on Earth, and many Orlando-area planetariums are making it easy for stargazers to get a good look this year. You can't miss it.

However, there is a global dust storm obscuring the red planet that could continue through August and into September.

Meanwhile, those in the Deep South, northern Plains and much of the West should have cloud-free conditions, leading to uninterrupted views of the red planet on the night that it reaches opposition. NASA says an approach that close won't happen again until 2287. North America is the only continent on Earth from which the eclipse will not be visible. Friday's will be long, lasting 1 hour and 43 minutes.
