Facebook finds 'sophisticated' efforts to disrupt U.S. politics

Facebook announced today that it has removed 32 accounts that it believes were fraudulently attempting to use divisive politics to influence the midterm elections.

The company says the campaign included efforts to organize counterprotests on August 10 to 12 for the white nationalist Unite The Right 2 rally planned in Washington that weekend.

However, Facebook's top security officials said the campaign involved similar "tools, techniques and procedures" employed by the Russian Internet Research Agency during the 2016 campaign.

Next week's event was not the only event the pages created.

"Any attempt to interfere in our elections is an affront to our democracy and it will not be allowed", Pence said at a cybersecurity summit in NY late on July 31. Warner expressed "pretty high confidence" that Russian Federation was behind the assault. Russian trolls affiliated with the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency used a combination of paid ads and organic posts to spread misinformation and sow discord among voters ahead of the election.

"It's why we're investing heavily in more people and better technology to prevent bad actors misusing Facebook - as well as working much more closely with law enforcement and other tech companies to better understand the threats we face".

A Russian propaganda arm tried to tamper in the 2016 USA election by posting and buying ads on Facebook, according to the company and US intelligence agencies. Facebook disclosed its findings after the New York Times reported on them earlier Tuesday.

And yes, a sampling of the now-banned Pages reveals a pattern we're all now very much familiar with: encouraging division and attempting to incite real-world action. Facebook's shares promptly dropped nearly 20 percent and haven't recovered. Facebook has been unable to tie the accounts to Russian Federation, whose Internet Research Agency was at the center of an indictment earlier this year for interfering with the 2016 election. It said the first ad was created in April 2017 and the last was created in June 2018. In addition to "Resisters", Facebook said the pages with the most followers included "Aztlan Warriors", "Black Elevation" and "Mindful Being".

The examples Facebook provided Tuesday of erased content did not support or attack any specific elected officials or parties.

The Silicon Valley darling will never stop being a target for those who wish to manipulate people. They paid third parties to spend approximately $11,000 (in United States and Canadian dollars) for around 150 ads on Facebook and Instagram.

The ads were paid for in both US and Canadian dollars, starting in April 2017 and ending in June 2018.

Representative Adam Schiff (Democrat-California) speaks during an interview with Mike Allen of Axios in Washington, DC, on January 31, 2018.

Facebook singled out the Atlantic Council, a globalist think tank whose members include Henry Kissinger and Dina Powell, for helping them identify "bad actors" on the social network. They are "dividing us along political and ideological lines, to the detriment of our cherished democratic system".

"We've made it harder for inauthentic actors to operate on Facebook", said Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. And once again, the assailants appear to be using Facebook. But he said that Democrats, not his fellow Republicans, would be the ones supported by Russian Federation.
