North Korea said to be working on new missiles

The North Korea flag flutters next to concertina wire at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur

Byrd spoke to the Reuters news agency in Osan just before a repatriation ceremony at the base, after which the remains were to be flown to Hawaii for further analysis.

Major-General Kim Do Gyun, the South's chief negotiator in charge of North Korea policy at the Defence Ministry, told reporters he would make efforts to craft "substantive" measures to ease tensions and build trust. "We'll see what happens".

The remains were then moved in gray vans to an airfield where USA and South Korean soldiers loaded them one by one into transport planes. Vice President Pence will take part in an Honorable Carry Ceremony for the remains when they arrive on Wednesday.

The official, who discussed previously undisclosed aspects of the remains issue on condition of anonymity, said it probably will take months if not years to fully determine individual identities from the remains, which have not yet been confirmed by USA specialists to be those of American servicemen.

Members of support group the Korean War Prisoners Of War and Missing In Action Network have told families to be cautious about the latest releases, saying they could be from other nationalities, not necessarily American.

During his Senate testimony on July 25, Pompeo said that factories in North Korea "continue to produce fissile material".

The Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the USA -led United Nations forces, including South Korea, technically still at war with the North.

The United States and North Korea conducted joint searches from 1996 until 2005, when Washington halted the operations, citing concerns about the safety of its personnel as Pyongyang stepped up its nuclear program.

Last week Pyongyang returned 55 cases of remains from the 1950-53 Korean War, in line with an agreement between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at their summit in Singapore in June.

The five missing soldiers should be buried in the United Nations cemetery in Busan, South Korea, where 117 other Dutch soldiers who died in the conflict were laid to rest, the VOKS said.

During a summit with Trump in June, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to a vaguely worded pledge to "work toward" the "denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

An organisation representing Dutch veterans who fought in North Korea has asked prime minister Mark Rutte to do his best to recover the bodies of five Dutch soldiers who died in the country in the 1950s.

The Washington Post reported Monday that United States intelligence agencies have obtained evidence indicating that North Korea is continuing to build long-range missiles.

Additional satellite photos show work now underway at the Sanumdong research facility near the capital city of Pyongyang on at least one and perhaps two liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs. "But then they'll say, 'The next ones, we need to find them, locate them, restore them.' And then they'll start charging". The two sides remain technically at war because a peace treaty was never signed. Indeed, the commitments regarding its nuclear weapons program were so vague as to be nearly meaningless, in my view.

While the provenance of the remains has not yet been confirmed, they're being treated with the respect that's traditionally accorded to fallen US troops. "So between this and Kangson, we are seeing an expanded and improved nuclear and missile force".

It's possible that questions about the identities of the remains could persist for years to come.

The last time USA military men or women were on the ground to teach for remains was 2005. Indonesia guarantees the security of all countries' representatives and contingents, including those of North Korea.
