Strong winds whipping up new threat as California wildfires continue to rage

California: Mendocino Complex Fire Explodes to 28000 Acres

The blaze, the seventh most destructive in California history, roared suddenly into Redding and adjacent communities after being whipped by gale-force winds into a fire storm that jumped the Sacramento River. The Ferguson Fire, burning near Yosemite, is almost 57,000 acres and is 30 percent contained.

The staff at the administrative annex of the Redding, California, outpatient clinic was evacuated when the fires got too close, but the two main facilities, which serve about 800 veterans daily, remain open, VA Northern California Health Care System officials said Tuesday.

"It's blowing into the fire, and it's kind of blowing it back on itself", he said. That fire was only about 40 miles north of twin blazes in Mendocino and Lake counties that took off earlier this week and together pose a threat to some 12,000 homes.

The state has spent more than $114 million fighting fires in July, the first month of California's fiscal year.

Temperatures will soar into the lower 100s in many places, Norman said, and whipping winds will be "wildly fluctuating as the fires generate their own localized wind".

McLean, the state fire spokesman, said there was no guarantee of safety in a state that has been ravaged by years of drought that has turned trees and brush to tinder.

There is an evacuation order affecting about 60 homes in the area of Mendocino Pass Road and the Black Butte Ranch community.

Six people have died in the fires, including a firefighter, a grandmother and her two young grandchildren. It's growing more product to catch on fire. The River Fire has burned over tens of thousands of hectares, destroyed homes and stands at only 27 percent contained. Since then, it has destroyed more than 880 homes. He bought his three-bedroom house a year ago using a loan from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

A relative identified one of the victims as Daniel Bush, 62. This map, which shows the fire's hot spots, not the actual containment lines or fire perimeter, actually has time-stamps showing when the satellite data was gathered. Redding Police on Tuesday asked for help from the public locating four people who are still missing.

Allen says crews prepare for the long haul.

Gaston said her brother had wanted to stay in his own home, but he had spotty cell service and, with the power out, he might not have gotten word of the fire. Officials had hoped to reopen Friday. And parts of Yosemite National Park remain closed as firefighters battle a blaze there.
