West Nile virus mosquitos

An adult living in Mead is in the hospital for neuro-invasive West Nile Virus - a rare and sometimes fatal form of the illness. Officials did not release any details as to the person's sex or age.

The Kent County Health Department says that they've found infected mosquitoes in the 49548, 49507 and 49504 zip codes.

Fairfax County health officials said they've seen a "large increase" in mosquitoes carrying the virus.

"I think it's important for us to talk a little bit about it today because it's one of those unusual years where there's not a lot of biting pressure from the so-called nuisance mosquitoes", he said.

The number of confirmed infections can vary from year to year.

The positive test came from one of the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit's mosquito traps in Simcoe. But one person was infected previous year and survived.in 2016, two people contracted the disease with one death.

Most people infected with the virus do not show symptoms, although more severe symptoms may occur, including fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash.

Overall, 39 cases of West Nile have been reported in humans as of July 24.

People 60 and older or people with medical conditions are at the greatest risk.

Since mosquitoes are attracted to standing water, residents are also advised to clean or empty out items that may hold water such as old tires, buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, flowerpots, tarps, trash containers, downspout extensions and other containers to stop mosquitoes from breeding on your property.
