North Korea slams U.S. for lacking ‘basic decorum’ in nuke talks

National Security Advisor John Bolton at the White House on Aug. 2 2018

The statement comes days after the USA stressed the need to keep up pressure on Pyongyang through tough sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons programme.

The latest statement by the North's foreign ministry also accused United States officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the worldwide sanctions and pressure".

But follow-up talks have seen little progress, fueling doubts over the North's intention to denuclearize in both South Korea and the US.

Trump has hailed North Korea's moves since his historic summit with leader Kim Jong Un during a summit in Singapore in June, where the US agreed to provide unspecified security guarantees in exchange for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea's presidential spokesman said last month that Seoul wants a declaration of the end of the 1950-53 war sooner than later.

The Korea Customs Service on Thursday said some importers here knew that coal shipments disguised as Russian products really came from North Korea.

The statement however was short on details and a United Nations panel of experts reported last week that North Korea is pressing ahead with its nuclear and missile programmes.

Fox anchor Jillian Mele read the last story in the headline segment, which depicted from North Korea of Kim Jong Un taking his wife on a tour of a fish pickling factory, starting out the segment saying that "Kim Jong Un is quite the romantic". Despite burgeoning diplomatic efforts to disarm North Korea, the worldwide community has maintained maximum pressure on the North.

State-run media in North Korea has recently stepped up criticism of the US.

Kim vowed in Singapore to work toward denuclearization, but the two sides have yet to define a deal to meet that goal and Washington insists sanctions pressure must be maintained during negotiations. An article Thursday in the Rodong Sinmun said a formal peace treaty ending the Korean War must take place before denuclearization.

In the most recent sign of growing frustration between Washington and Pyongyang, North Korea criticised senior American officials for insisting that North Korea give up its nuclear weapons first before easing sanctions. Their refusal to comply could explain the frustration expressed by United States officials in recent days.

"We remain unchanged in our will to uphold the intentions of the top leaders of (North Korea) and the U.S. and to build trust and implement in good faith the (Trump-Kim) joint statement step by step", it said.

In May, an official statement said "we do not hide our feeling of repugnance towards" Bolton after he suggested Libya as a potential model for future North Korean denuclearization. "The US should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner".
