Ocasio-Cortez stumps, fundraises across the nation

Abdul El-Sayed

"Americans have the sticker shock of health care as it is", said, who won her Democratic primary in NY.

She's been raising campaign cash in sold-out theaters, rubbing shoulders with leaders in the party's liberal wing and building an audience of 788,000 Twitter followers.

Hoping to build on the momentum set in motion by the New Yorker's stunning defeat of Rep. Joe Crowley, insurgent candidates in Michigan, Missouri and Kansas notched their share of victories, but there were no major surprises -- almost all the expected winners won - or dents made in skepticism among party powerbrokers.

This week, she got up to bat again in an interview with Pod Save America.

Four underdog candidates whom she stumped for in recent weeks lost in Democratic primaries in Michigan, Kansas and Missouri.

"And they said it wouldn't work in the Midwest", Ocasio-Cortez declared at the start of her 10-minute speech, to the cheers of 1,500 people packed into a sweaty auditorium. As of last Thursday, the organization said it has 48,000 members. But it didn't translate into victory.

We'll ask her about everything from her big Tuesday night primary win, to her opponent Bill Schuette, and who her running mate might possibly be.

She will in all likelihood become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

El-Sayed had the blessings of Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, who campaigned for him on consecutive weekends ahead of the primary. (Estes narrowly beat Thompson a year ago in a low-turnout special election.) And Welder will have to beat two strong candidates in the August 7 primary: history teacher Tom Niermann has the backing of a slew of local politicians, and EMILY's List has already pledged to spend heavily to back former Obama administration official Sharice Davids.

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro challenged Democratic congressional candidate for New York's 14th district, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to a political debate - even throwing in an offer of $10,000 to her campaign if she agreed.

"What we need to realize is our struggles are linked", she told supporters. "It's not very often that we overperform them in primary turnout, especially when you have equally competitive primaries on both sides". Bernie Sanders won his signature victory in the 2016 presidential primary, former state Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer routed the insurgent Abdul El-Sayed. Slotkin, who has raised more money than Rep. Mike Bishop, said that particularly this year, voters are looking for candidates "who will no longer just kind of check the box on voting the right way" but are asking how they will defend their rights.

Lewinsky, who knows from trouble and male attention, weighed in by calling Ocasio-Cortez a "badass".

The interviewer continued to press her for clarification, at which point Ocasio-Cortez somewhat deflected the request, stating that she is "not the expert on geopolitics on this issue".
