Largest fire in California's history continues to spread north

High wildfire alert due to heat and storm threat

Notification of the next of kin is now in progress.

The unidentified firefighter was killed yesterday while battling the Ranch Fire, one of two blazes that make up the Mendocino Complex, which has already burned about 349,000 acres, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.

A Cal Fire incident commander offered a brief statement at a news conference Monday.

Six firefighters have died in those wildfires.

The firefighters normally work in the Los Padres National Forest.

After a month of burning, the Ferguson Fire has singed 96,457 acres across three national forests and private land.

He said dry thunderstorms, which produce lightning but little rain, are expected for parts of the Rocky Mountain region, while the U.S. north-west has critical fire weather conditions that include strong winds and low relative humidity.

The fire became the largest in state history last week, passing the Thomas Fire from December 2017 as it grew to over 283,000 acres. "Sorry if we weren't supposed to", read the note from Cal Fire. It has burned about 550 square miles and destroyed almost 150 homes in Mendocino, Lake and Colusa counties.

"We're spending probably, this season, over $2 billion fighting forest fires when many of them could be prevented by better forest management techniques", Zinke said.

To the family's surprise, their pet fish had survived the California fires because fire fighters and police officers fed him as they investigated the home.

On Thursday, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue tweeted that he and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke would be visiting the city of Redding Monday, where the Carr Fire is about half contained.

Another massive blaze, the Carr Fire, has blackened about 207,000 acres and killed eight people in and around Shasta County, north of Sacramento near the OR state line.
