Vehicle rams U.K. Parliament gate; pedestrians injured

Armed police surround the car outside the Houses of Parliament

A man has been arrested and a number of people injured after a vehicle collided with security barriers outside Britain's Houses of Parliament in London.

"At 07:37hrs on Tuesday 14 August, a silver Ford Fiesta collided with a number of cyclists and pedestrians, before crashing into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences, and a woman is being treated in hospital for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. Reports indicate at least some of the injured were cyclists.

On Wednesday, the London police announced that they had identified the suspect as Salih Khater, according to The New York Times.

Later images showed police holding the man, dressed in jeans and a black puffer jacket, in handcuffs as roads and Underground stations around parliament were sealed off.

Eyewitness Ewalina Ochab told the BBC: "I think it looked intentional - the vehicle drove at speed and towards the barriers".

"I was walking on the other side (of the road)".

The cafe-goer, who would only give his name as Adam, said: "I am still in shock". When he got to the scene, he staked out Westminster before smashing his auto.

Police say an incident in which a auto was driven into a barrier near the Houses of Parliament appears to be a deliberate act, but the suspect under arrest is not cooperating.

In June 2017, seven people were killed and dozens injured when three men rammed pedestrians with a auto at London Bridge. He is being held at a south London police station. "There was smoke coming out of the auto", he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

Armed police stand in the street after a auto crashed outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, Britain, Aug.14, 2018.

The driver "had two hands on the steering wheel and he did not look back over his shoulder to look at the damage he'd created - he was just looking deadpan straight in front of him", she said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people who have been injured".

Masood abandoned his vehicle then stabbed and killed a police officer before being shot in a courtyard outside Parliament.

The incident comes more than a year after an attack in the same area, in which four bystanders, including an American tourist, and a police officer were killed.
